Can You Take Shilajit With Low Blood Pressure or Diabetes?

Written by Taj Sultan. We sell shilajit, and we'd rather lose a sale than have someone stop their diabetes or BP medicine. This is general information, not medical advice.

Quick answer

Diabetes: shilajit is not a diabetes treatment and must never replace your medicine. Some animal studies suggest it may lower blood sugar slightly, which has not been confirmed in proper human trials. If you use insulin or tablets such as gliclazide or glimepiride, that possibility is a reason to speak to your doctor first and check your sugar more often if you start. Low blood pressure: there is no good human data. If you often feel dizzy or faint, or take BP medicine, ask your doctor first. If you do take it, start with a rice-grain amount and choose resin with a heavy-metal report, because diabetes already puts strain on the kidneys.

Shilajit and diabetes: what is actually known

Searches like "shilajit for sugar" are common in Pakistan, and many sellers imply it controls diabetes. The evidence doesn't support that:

  • Animal studies have reported lower blood glucose in diabetic rats given shilajit. Results in rats often don't carry over to people.
  • Good human trials of shilajit for blood sugar control don't exist yet.
  • The US NCCIH says there isn't enough evidence that any dietary supplement can manage or prevent type 2 diabetes, and that supplements can interact with diabetes medicines.

So the honest position is: shilajit might nudge blood sugar down a little, which could matter if you already take medicine that lowers it. That's why the doctor conversation comes first.

Medicines to be careful with

Medicine type Why care is needed What to do
Insulin Any extra sugar-lowering effect raises the risk of a hypo. Ask your doctor first. If they agree, check your sugar more often for the first 2 weeks.
Sulfonylureas (gliclazide, glimepiride, glibenclamide) These can cause hypos on their own. As above.
Metformin, DPP-4 inhibitors, SGLT2 inhibitors Lower hypo risk, but interactions haven't been studied. Tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Blood pressure medicines No data on interaction. If your BP is already low, any further drop matters. Ask your doctor, especially if you get dizzy when standing.

Never change or stop a prescribed medicine because you've started a supplement. Signs of a hypo include shaking, sweating, sudden hunger, a fast heartbeat and confusion: follow the plan your diabetes team gave you.

Shilajit and low blood pressure

Some sources suggest shilajit may lower blood pressure slightly. It hasn't been properly studied in people with low BP. If your BP is normally low and you feel fine, a doctor may be happy for you to try a small amount. If you faint, get dizzy on standing, or take medicine that lowers BP, ask first. Fainting, chest pain or confusion need urgent medical care, not a supplement.

If your doctor agrees: a careful plan

  1. Start with a rice-grain amount (about 100 to 150 mg) dissolved in warm water after breakfast, for one week.
  2. Keep a log of your sugar readings or BP for those first two weeks.
  3. Increase slowly to a small pea (about 300 mg) only if your readings stay steady.
  4. Stop and call your doctor if you have more lows, dizziness or anything unusual.
  5. Keep everything else the same: medicine, diet and checkups. See our diet plan for sugar patients for the food side.

Why a heavy-metal report matters more if you have diabetes

Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney damage, and the kidneys are what clear metals like lead and cadmium. So untested resin is a worse idea for a sugar patient than for anyone else. Ask any brand for a report number. Ours: PCSIR Laboratories Complex, Lahore, report FBRC/SK/ANAL.REP./1006, arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury not detected. It's on our lab reports page, with BECS Analytics report 2512-905 (75.17% fulvic acid). If you have diabetic kidney disease, ask your specialist before taking any supplement, including ours.

Frequently asked questions

Can a diabetic patient take shilajit?

Some adults with diabetes may, after their doctor reviews their medicines and kidney function. It is not a diabetes treatment and must not replace medicine.

Does shilajit lower blood sugar?

Animal studies suggest it might, slightly. That hasn't been shown in good human trials. If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, check your sugar more often if your doctor agrees to you trying it.

Can shilajit cure diabetes?

No. No supplement cures diabetes. Be wary of anyone who says otherwise.

Is shilajit safe with low BP?

It hasn't been studied in people with low BP. If you get dizzy or faint, or take BP medicine, ask your doctor first and start very small.

Does shilajit raise blood pressure?

There is no good evidence that it raises blood pressure. If you have high BP, keep taking your medicine and mention the supplement to your doctor.

Roman Urdu mein khulasa

Salajeet sugar ka ilaj nahi hai aur dawa ki jagah kabhi na lein. Kuch janwaron par tehqeeq mein sugar thori kam hui, is liye insulin ya gliclazide jaisi goliyan lene wale pehle doctor se poochein aur shuru karein to sugar ziada baar check karein. Low BP walon par koi achi tehqeeq nahi, chakkar aate hon to pehle doctor se mashwara karein. Chawal ke daane jitni miqdar se shuru karein aur sirf heavy metals lab report wali salajeet lein.
