Diet Plan for Sugar Patients in Pakistan: Roti, Chawal, Fruit and a Sample Day
Written by Taj Sultan. General information, not a personal diet prescription. If you use insulin or tablets that can cause low sugar, don't skip meals or change your diet sharply without speaking to your doctor or dietitian.
Quick answer
A good diet for sugar patients in Pakistan doesn't mean giving up roti and daal. Fill half the plate with sabzi or salad, a quarter with protein (daal, chana, eggs, chicken, fish) and a quarter with roti or rice. Cut out sugary chai, cold drinks and juice first, because those raise sugar fastest. Choose whole fruit over juice, grilled over fried, and walk after meals if your doctor agrees. No supplement, shilajit included, replaces this or your medicine.
The plate method
| Part of the plate | What goes there |
|---|---|
| Half: non-starchy vegetables | Palak, saag, bhindi, tori, lauki, gobhi, band gobhi, karela, tomato, kheera, salad |
| Quarter: protein | Daal, chana, lobia, eggs, chicken, fish, plain dahi |
| Quarter: carbohydrate | One chapati of chakki atta, or a measured portion of rice |
| Drink | Water, lassi without sugar, lemon water without sugar, chai without sugar |
Daal and chana are protein and carbohydrate together, so a big bowl counts toward both. If you have kidney disease, ask your doctor about protein amounts.
Roti and chawal: how much?

Most sugar patients can still eat roti and rice. What matters is portion and pairing:
- One medium chapati of chakki (whole-wheat) atta per meal is a common starting point. Two may be fine for active people; your sugar readings will tell you.
- Rice: about half a cup cooked, eaten with daal or salan and salad, not a full plate of biryani.
- Paratha, puri, naan and white bread raise sugar faster and add oil. Keep them for occasional meals.
- Eat the sabzi and protein first, then the roti. Many people see a smaller sugar spike this way.
Pakistani food list
| Food group | Choose more often | Keep small or occasional |
|---|---|---|
| Grains | Chakki atta roti, daliya, plain oats | Naan, paratha, puri, white bread, rusk |
| Daal and beans | Moong, masoor, mash, chana, lobia, kala chana | Fried pakoras, chana chaat with sweet chutney |
| Vegetables | Palak, karela, lauki, tori, bhindi, gobhi, salad | Large portions of aloo |
| Protein | Eggs, chicken, fish, lean meat (grilled or salan with less oil) | Broast, nuggets, processed meat |
| Dairy | Plain dahi, milk without sugar | Sweet lassi, kheer, flavoured milk |
| Drinks | Water, chai without sugar, lemon water | Cold drinks, packaged juice, sharbat |
| Snacks | A handful of nuts, roasted chana, a fruit | Biscuits, mithai, cake, chips |
Which fruit?
Whole fruit is fine for most sugar patients in sensible portions. Good everyday choices: guava (amrood), apple, pear, orange, jamun and papaya. Mango, grapes, banana and chikoo are sweeter: have a small portion, not a bowl. Avoid juice, even fresh: it delivers the sugar of several fruits without the fibre.
A sample day
| Time | Example |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | Two-egg omelette with onion and tomato, one chapati, chai without sugar |
| Mid-morning (if needed) | One guava or a small bowl of plain dahi |
| Lunch | Daal or chicken salan, sabzi, salad, one chapati or half a cup of rice |
| Evening | Roasted chana or a small handful of unsalted nuts, chai without sugar |
| Dinner | Grilled fish or chicken tikka, sabzi, salad, one chapati; a 15-minute walk afterwards |
Adjust the timing to your medicines. If you take insulin or sulfonylureas, your doctor may want you to eat at set times and not skip meals.
Prediabetes and insulin resistance
If you've been told your sugar is "borderline", this is the best time to act. Replace sweet drinks with water, follow the plate method, walk 30 minutes a day if you can, and sleep 7 to 8 hours. Small, steady changes beat crash diets.
Ramadan
Fasting can be risky for some people with diabetes, especially those on insulin or sulfonylureas, or with kidney or heart problems. See your doctor a few weeks before Ramadan. If fasting is safe for you, make sehri a proper meal with protein and roti, break the fast with water and a date or two, and go easy on pakoras, samosas and Rooh Afza.
Where supplements fit (and don't)
No supplement manages diabetes. The US NCCIH says there isn't enough evidence that any dietary supplement can manage or prevent type 2 diabetes, and some interact with medicines. That includes shilajit: it isn't a diabetes treatment, and you shouldn't take it without your doctor's agreement if you use insulin or tablets. We explain why in shilajit with low BP or diabetes.
