Quick answer

Two placebo-controlled trials have tested purified shilajit in men. In healthy men aged 45 to 55, 250 mg twice a day for 90 days raised total and free testosterone and DHEAS compared with placebo (Pandit et al., 2016). In active men, 500 mg a day for 8 weeks helped them keep more strength after a tiring workout; 250 mg a day did not (Keller et al., 2019). Neither study tested men with low testosterone, erection problems or infertility, so shilajit is not a proven treatment for any of them. The dose used was 500 mg a day, about the size of a pea.

What the studies in men found

Study Men studied Dose and length What changed
Pandit et al., 2016 (Andrologia) Healthy men aged 45 to 55 250 mg twice a day, 90 days Total and free testosterone and DHEAS higher than placebo; LH and FSH unchanged
Keller et al., 2019 (J Int Soc Sports Nutr) 63 recreationally active men 250 or 500 mg a day, 8 weeks 500 mg group kept more strength after a fatiguing leg exercise; 250 mg group did not

Both studies used purified, standardised shilajit, and neither has yet been repeated in a large trial. Every human study, including those in women and the 2026 resin trials, is summarised in Shilajit Benefits: What the Human Studies Actually Show.

What shilajit hasn't been shown to do for men

  • Erection problems: no trial has tested shilajit as a treatment. Erection problems can be an early sign of diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, so see a doctor rather than self-treating.
  • Low testosterone: the 2016 study was in healthy men. Men diagnosed with low testosterone weren't studied.
  • Weight loss or muscle gain on its own: the strength result was about holding strength under fatigue, not building muscle.

How much shilajit should a man take?

Both trials in men used up to 500 mg a day (in the 2016 study, 250 mg twice a day). Most men take 300 to 500 mg once a day, about the size of a pea:

  1. Start with a rice-grain amount (about 100 to 150 mg) for the first week.
  2. Dissolve it in a cup of warm (not boiling) water, milk or tea.
  3. Morning is most common; with breakfast if your stomach is sensitive.
  4. Take it for 8 to 12 weeks, then a 2 to 4 week break.
  5. More is not better: the studies didn't test more than 500 mg a day.

Side effects for men, and who should check first

In the studies, purified shilajit was well tolerated. Reported side effects are usually mild: an upset stomach, a headache or feeling warm. Halve the amount if that happens, and stop if it doesn't settle. Ask a doctor first if you have gout or high uric acid, kidney or liver disease, or iron overload, or if you take medicine for blood pressure, blood sugar or the heart. The bigger risk is untested resin: raw shilajit can contain lead and arsenic, which build up when taken every day. Full list: shilajit side effects and who should avoid it.

How to choose shilajit as a man in Pakistan

Ask for a heavy-metal lab report with a report number, a named lab and a test date, and check that lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury results are printed. Pure resin lets you know exactly how much shilajit you take; gummies and honey blends don't. See the top 10 brands in Pakistan ranked by their lab reports.

Taj Sultan is pure sun-dried resin: PCSIR Lahore report FBRC/SK/ANAL.REP./1006 (July 2026: arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury not detected), 75.17% fulvic acid (BECS Analytics, report 2512-905). Frequently asked questions

Is shilajit good for men?

In two placebo-controlled trials, purified shilajit raised testosterone and DHEAS in healthy men aged 45 to 55 (90 days) and helped active men keep strength under fatigue (8 weeks, 500 mg a day). It hasn't been shown to treat any disease.

Does shilajit increase testosterone?

In one trial of healthy men aged 45 to 55, 250 mg twice a day for 90 days raised total and free testosterone compared with placebo. It hasn't been tested in men with low testosterone, and the result hasn't been repeated in a large trial.

Is shilajit a natural Viagra?

No. No trial has tested shilajit for erection problems, and it doesn't work like erection medicines. If you have erection problems, see a doctor, because they can be an early sign of diabetes or heart disease.

How much shilajit should a man take daily?

300 to 500 mg a day, about the size of a pea. The studies in men used up to 500 mg a day.

When should men take shilajit?

Most men take it in the morning, dissolved in warm water, milk or tea. No time of day has been shown to work better, so pick one you'll remember.

What are the side effects of shilajit for men?

Usually mild: upset stomach, headache or feeling warm. Check with a doctor first if you have gout, kidney or liver disease, or take blood pressure, sugar or heart medicine. Untested resin can contain lead and arsenic.

Shilajit is a food supplement, not a medicine. If you take medication or have a health condition, ask your doctor before use.
