Shilajit for Women: What It Can and Can't Do, Plus the Vitamins Women in Pakistan Most Often Lack
Written by Taj Sultan. Most shilajit marketing is aimed at men; this is for women who want straight answers. General information, not medical advice.
Quick answer
Yes, healthy adult women can take shilajit, but not during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The one controlled study in women gave healthy women aged 30 to 65 either 125 or 250 mg twice a day for 14 weeks; it reported no side effects, and the higher dose improved blood flow in the skin. That's encouraging but limited. For most women in Pakistan, tiredness, hair fall and weakness are more often caused by low vitamin D, iron, B12 or folate, which a blood test can find. Sort those first. If you then add shilajit, start at 200 to 300 mg a day of resin with a heavy-metal lab report.
What the research in women found
In a 2019 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (Das et al.), healthy women aged 30 to 65 took shilajit at 125 mg or 250 mg twice a day for 14 weeks. Researchers took small skin samples before and after. At the higher dose, skin microperfusion (blood flow through the tiny vessels in the skin) improved compared with placebo, and genes linked to blood-vessel growth and the skin's supporting structure (extracellular matrix) were more active. No adverse effects were reported.
What it does not show: that shilajit makes skin look younger, stops hair fall, balances hormones or helps with periods or PCOS. Nobody has tested those. One small study of one standardised extract is a starting point, not proof.
The vitamins women in Pakistan most often lack
| Nutrient | Why it matters | Signs it may be low | Good food sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitamin D | Bones, muscles. Deficiency is very common in Pakistan, especially in women who spend most of the day indoors or covered. | Aching bones and back, weak muscles, tiredness | Egg yolk, oily fish, fortified milk; sunlight on the skin |
| Iron | Makes red blood cells. Periods and pregnancy raise needs. | Tired, breathless, dizzy, pale, hair fall | Meat, liver, daal, chana, palak, with lemon or fruit for vitamin C |
| Vitamin B12 | Nerves and blood | Tingling, tiredness, poor memory | Eggs, milk, dahi, meat, fish |
| Folate (folic acid) | Essential before and in early pregnancy | Often no signs; taken as a supplement when planning pregnancy | Leafy greens, daal, chana; folic acid tablets as advised |
| Calcium | Bones, especially after 40 | Usually none until bones weaken | Milk, dahi, cheese, sesame |
Ask your doctor for a CBC, ferritin, vitamin D and B12 if you are tired all the time or losing hair. Don't take iron tablets without a test: too much iron is harmful.
Shilajit vs a multivitamin
They aren't substitutes. A multivitamin supplies measured amounts of specific vitamins and minerals. Shilajit contains fulvic and humic acids and small, variable amounts of minerals; it won't correct a vitamin D, iron or B12 deficiency. If a test shows a deficiency, treat it with what your doctor prescribes.
If you decide to try shilajit

- Dose: start with a rice grain for a week, then 200 to 300 mg (a small pea) once a day. The study in women used up to 500 mg a day in two doses.
- How: dissolved in warm water, milk or tea, usually in the morning.
- How long: give it 8 to 14 weeks before judging, then take a break.
- Avoid if: pregnant, trying to conceive, breastfeeding, or you have iron overload, gout, or kidney or liver disease. Ask your doctor if you take thyroid, diabetes or BP medicine. See who should avoid shilajit.
- Choose tested resin. Ours was tested by PCSIR Lahore: arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury not detected (report FBRC/SK/ANAL.REP./1006). BECS Analytics measured 75.17% fulvic acid. Both are on our lab reports page.
Frequently asked questions
Can women take shilajit?
Yes, healthy adult women can, at 200 to 300 mg a day to start. Avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and check with your doctor if you have a health condition.
Is shilajit good for women's skin?
One 14-week study in women found improved blood flow in the skin at 250 mg twice a day. It didn't measure appearance, so claims of younger-looking skin are unproven.
Does shilajit help with hair fall?
There's no study on shilajit and hair. Hair fall in women is often linked to low iron, vitamin D, thyroid problems or stress, so get those checked.
Can shilajit balance hormones or help PCOS?
No study has tested shilajit for hormones in women or for PCOS. See a gynaecologist for irregular periods or PCOS symptoms.
Can I take shilajit during pregnancy?
No. There is no safety data in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so avoid it.
Roman Urdu mein khulasa
Sehatmand khawateen salajeet le sakti hain, lekin hamal aur doodh pilane ke dauran bilkul nahi. Khawateen par ek tehqeeq mein 14 hafte istemal se jild mein khoon ka bahao behtar hua aur koi side effect nahi hua. Lekin Pakistan mein aksar thakawat aur baal girne ki wajah vitamin D, iron, B12 ya folic acid ki kami hoti hai, is liye pehle test karwayein. Salajeet 200 se 300 mg roz se shuru karein aur sirf lab-tested resin lein.
